New York Opera Festival Announces 2021 Streaming Slate

The New York Opera Festival has announced its 2021 lineup, which will take place virtually in light of continued concerns over COVID-19.

The New York Opera Fest will present a Kick-Off Event and NYOA Service Awards. The virtual event will feature both live and pre-recorded performances from New York City’s opera companies. In addition, NYOA will celebrate the life and honor the memory of Antoine Hodge as this NYOA Festival Honoree.

Regina Opera Company presents its “2021 Spring Concert” featuring four of Regina Opera’s soloists, Lisa Bryce, Galina Ivannikova, Lindell Carter and Hyunho Cho. Pianist Dmitry Glivinskiy accompanies in a concert recorded from Sunset Park theater and will feature arias by Puccini, Verdi, and Massenet.

Streaming Date: May 1-June 30, 2021

Hunter Opera Theater will present the Richard Burke Pocket Opera at Hunter College. This year’s operas will be “The Taxi Driver,” with a libretto and music by Joe Young, “The Blue Bird Opera: The Pursuit of Happiness,” with a libretto and music by Alyssa Regent, “Panic Room,” with a libretto and music by Deshawn Withers, and “Prince Danila Govorila,” written by Matthew Sandahl and Alkiviades Meimaris.

Prototype will present “Modulation,” a creative investigation on the strands that weave together our lives over this past tumultuous and revelatory year.

Prototype will also present Times3 (Times x Times x Times) by composer Pamela Z and theatre artist Geoff Sobelle. The two will collaborate on a site-specific sonic journey through Times Square.

The Lighthouse Opera Company presents “Die Zauberflöte” conducted by Stephen Francis Vasta and directed by John Tedeschi and scenes/arias from Verdi’s “La Traviata” performed by a few different singers.

No Dominion Theater Company will present “Hindsight,” a new true crime opera by librettist Bea Goodwin and composer Felix Jarrar featuring singers Gabriel Hernandez and Joseph Beutel.

On Site Opera will present “The Road We Came,” a new opera- and song-based project that explores the composers, musicians and places that define the rich Black history of New York City.

HERE Arts Center will present a live serial space opera from the creators of the world’s first Zoom opera “All Decisions Will Be Made By Consensus” and the digital surveillance opera Looking at You.

New Camerata Opera will present “The Brooklyn Job,” an interactive, virtual museum heist written and directed by New York comedian Sarah Morgan Ashey. Under the music direction of Dan Franklin Smith, the cast will include sopranos Samina Aslam and Barbara Porto, mezzo-sopranos Eva Parr, Julia Tang, and Anna Tonna, tenors Erik Bagger and Victor Khodadad, baritones Stan Lacy and Scott Lindroth, and bass Kofi Hayford.

The Brooklyn College Conservatory will present “Carmen” in a prerecorded performance directed by Isabel Milenski with music preparation by Dmitry Glivinskiy. The performance will be shown at the Brooklyn College Opera Theatre.

SAS Performing Arts Company and Studios will present “A Night at the Opera,” a concert featuring music by  Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini, and Strauss.

Beth Morrison Projects will present its “Next Generation” Concert, streamed from the National Sawdust in Brooklyn. The showcase will feature music by 10 first-round composer finalists.

AS / COA will present Louis Aguirre and Rafael Almanza’s opera-oratorio “Ebbó.” The new production was commissioned by the Americas Society and feature soprano Estelí Gómez.

Heartbeat Opera will present its first opera commission “The Extinctionist.” The work is composed by Daniel Schlosberg with a libretto by Amanda Quaid. The first full production is set for Spring 2022 and relates the story of a young couple trying to have a baby as ice caps melt and Brooklyn is set to be underwater anytime soon. The mother starts wondering if the only way to save her daughter is not having her at all.

The little OPERA theatre of ny will showcase “Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda” by Monteverdi alongside music by Barbara Strozzi and Dario Costello.

Bronx Opera will showcase Mozart’s “Impresario” directed by Benjamin Spierman and conducted by Michael Spierman. The opera will star lake Friedman, Halley Gilbert, Ben Spierman, Hannah Spierman, and Jack Anderson White.

Additionally, Bronx Opera, in conjunction with Bronxnet Community Cable, will present “Sunday Night at the Opera” every Sunday. In addition to present operas from Bronxnet’s vault, there will also be pre-show intros and intermission interviews for each show.

Dell’Arte Opera Ensemble will stream both its “Songs of Hibernation” and “Summer Garden Recitals” throughout the summer months.

Experiments in Opera will broadcast its podcast opera “Aqua Net & Funyuns,” five newly-commissioned, original stories written by five different composer / librettist teams. The opera features music by music by Tariq Al-Sabir, Jason Cady, Kamala Sankaram, Aaron Siegel, and Michi Wiancko, and librettos by Jason Cady, Cara Ehlenfeldt, Annie-Sage Whitehurst, and Daniel Shepard.
