Divaria Productions to Present ‘Rival Queens’

By David Salazar

Divaria Productions is set to present the digital world premiere of “Rival Queens” on Nov. 12, 2020, followed by a second performance on Nov. 14.

The showcase features music from Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda,” but seeks to dig deeper into the relationship between the two women throughout their lives (rather than the limited months as portrayed in the Italian opera). The work will thus blend documentary film with the opera as well as letters exchanged between the two women, who never actually met in person.

The production, which was originally scheduled for performance at Sag Harbour, will feature soprano Ashley Galvani Bell as Mary Queen of Scots, mezzo-soprano Anna Tonna as Queen Elizabeth I, Michal Gizinski as the Narrator, and tenor Andrew Owens as Leicester. The film is directed by Anton Armendariz Diaz with music directed by Sergio Martinez Zangroniz.
