In contrast to his most frequently performed masterpieces – “La Bohème,” “Tosca,” “Madama Butterfly,” and “Manon Lescaut”- it is less reliant on sentimentality. Its orchestral writing is considerably richer and more sophisticated, while its orientalist palette is even more fully realized than that of “Madama Butterfly.” {…}
