Les Talens Lyriques’ 2023-24 Season to Feature the World Premiere of Salieri’s Opera ‘Kubla Khan’ (‘Cublai, Gran Kan De Tartari’)

The world premiere of Antonio Salieri’s opera “Kubla Khan” (“Cublai, Gran Kan De Tartari”)  is among the many highlights of Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques’ 2023-24 season. Here is the full rundown of what audiences can expect this year.

Starting off, sopranos Marie Lys and Judith van Wanroij perform “Ave Maris Stella” with Christophe Rousset at the organ, harpsichord, and conducting the ensemble.

Performance Dates: July 28 – August 23, 2023

Next is “Tribute to Pauline Viardot” featuring soprano soloist Marina Viotti.

Performance Date: August 25, 2023

Tenor Ian Bostridge presents a concert of Michel Lambert, Corelli, Purcell, and Handel in “Recital with Ian Bostridge.”

Performance Date: October 5, 2023

Soprano Apolline Raï-Westphal leads “Tragic Handelian figures.”

Performance Date: October 8, 2023

The Kennedy Center and El Museo del Barrio host “Couperin le Grand” staring baritone Johnathan Woody.

Performance Dates: October 25, 2023 & May 8, 2024 

Luigi Cherubini’s “Médée” features soprano Marina Rebeka in the title role with tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac, sopranos Maria Korkareva and Régina Koncz, and mezzo-sopranos Natalia Skrycka and Ekaterina Chyka Rubinstein. Rousset conducts the Chœur du Staatsoper de Berlin and Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin at the Staatsoper unter den Linden.

Performance Dates: November 17 – December 23, 2023 

Soprano Sandrine Piau serves as soloist in “Grandes figures tragiques.”

Performance Dates: December 10, 2023 (Switzerland) & December 12, 2023 (France)

Tenor Reinoud Van Mechelen takes on the title role in Lully’s “Atys.”

Performance Dates: January 4, 2024 (Austria) & January 22, 2024 (France)

Mozart’s “Così fan tutte” stars Agneta Eichenholz as Fiordiligi, Claudia Mahnke as Dorabella, Rainer Trost as Ferrando, Russel Braun as Guglielmo, Patricia Petibon in the role of Despina, and Georg Nigl as Don Alfonso. They are joined by the Chœur Stella Maris.

Performance Dates: February 2-22, 2024 (France) & June 7-8, 2024 (Mozartfest, Germany)

Domenico Cimarosa’s “The Olympiad” stars Josh Lovell, Rocío Pérez, Marie Lys, Maite Beaumont, Sophie Harmsen, and Alex Banfield.

Performance Dates: March 31, 2024 (Austria) & May 16, 2024 (France)

The world premiere of Salieri’s 1788 “Kubla Khan” (“Cublai, Gran Kan de’ Tartari”) with libretto by Giovanni Battista Casti is directed by Martin G. Bergera and conducted by Rousset. The cast includes Carlo Lepore, Marie Lys, Alasdair Kent, Lauranne Oliva, Fabio Capitanucci, Äneas Humm, Ana Quintans, and Giorgio Caoduro.

Performance Dates: April 5-15, 2024 

“The Festivities” or “The Triumph of Thalia” features sopranos Ah Young Hong, Pascale Beaudin, Margot Rood, and Angel Azzarra, tenors Matthew Newlin and Patrick Kilbride, baritone Jean-Bernard Cerin, and bass-baritones Taylor Ward and Jonathan Woody. They are joined by Opera Lafayette.

Performance Dates: May 3-5, 2024 (Kennedy Center) & May 7, 2024 (New York Festival)

Tenor Jeremy Ovenden takes on the title role in Händel’s “Jephtha.”

Performance Dates: March 17, 2024 (Norway), May 28, 2024 (Belgium), & May 30, 2024 (Germany)

Mezzo-soprano Ambroisine Bré stars in Lully’s “Armide.”

Performance Dates: June 17-25, 2024
