Jonas Kaufmann, Sonya Yoncheva, Lisette Oropesa, Julia Bullock, Sondra Radvanovsky Headline Gran Teatre del Liceu’s 2023-24 Season

Barcelona’s Gran Teatre del Liceu has unveiled its 2023-24 season.

Operas

The season opens with “Eugene Onegin” in a production by Christof Loy. The cast stars Svetlana Aksenova, Kristina Mkhitaryan, Audun Iversen, Iurii Saoilov, Alexey Neklyudov, and Jose Bros, among others.

Performance Dates: Sept. 27 – Oct. 8, 2023

Elkhanah Pulitzer directs John Adams’ “Antony and Cleopatra.” The composer conducts a cast starring Julia Bullock, Gerald Finley, Paul Appleby, Alfred Walker, and Elizabeth DeShong.

Performance Dates: Oct. 28 – Nov. 8, 2023

Giovanni Antonini conducts a concert version of Haydn’s “Orlando Paladino.” The opera stars Emoke Baráth, Josh Lovell, Núria Rial, Renata Dolcini, Krystian Adam, and Silvia Frigat.

Performance Dates: Oct. 29, 2023

Elena Pankratova and Ekaterina Semenchuk headline “Turandot.” They are joined by Michael Fabiano, Martine Muehle, Nadine Sierra, Maria Agresta, and Marta Mathéu.

Performance Dates: Nov. 26 – Dec. 16, 2023

Next up is a concert version of Charpentier’s “Medée” with Magdalena Kozená, Reinoud van Mechelen, Luca Tittoto, Carolyn Sampson, Gyula Orendt, and Angela Hicks. Sir Simon Rattle conducts.

Clémentine Margaine and Varduhi Ambrahamyan headline “Carmen.” They are joined by Adriana Gonzalez, Jeanine de Bique, Charles Castronovo, Leonardo Capalbo, Simón Orfila, and Eric Green. Josep Pons conducts.

Riccardo Frizza conducts “Un Ballo in Maschera” with a cast starring Freddie De Tommaso, Arturo Chacón-Cruz, Artur Rucinski, Ernesto Petti, Anna Pirozzi, and Saioa Hernández.

Performance Dates: Feb. 9 – 20, 2024

René Jacobs leads a concert performances of Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo.” The cast includes Yannick Debus, Raffaele Pe, Nicolas Brooymans, and Eva Zaïcik, among others.

Robert Wilson stages Händel’s “Messiah” with a cast starring Julia Lezhneva, Kate Lindsey, Richard Croft, Kresimir Strazanac, Alexis Fousekis, and Max Harris. Josep Pons conducts.

Pierre Bleuse leads Héctor Parra’s “Orgia” which will star Jonathan McGovern, Jone Martínez, and Ausrine Stundyte.

Gabór Bretz and Ausrine Stundyte headline a concert performance of “Bluebeard’s Castle” with Josep Pons conducting.

Performance Dates: April 12, 2024

Emma Dante directs “La Cenerentola” with Gaëlle Arquez and Carol García taking on the lead role of Angelina. As Prince Ramiro, audience will see Javier Camarena and Sunnyboy Dladla. Other cast members include Florian Sempey, Carles Pachón, Carlos Chausson, Paolo Bordogna, and Isabella Gaudí. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts.

Gustavo Dudamel conducts “Fidelio” with a cast starring Andrew Staples, Tamara Wilson, Gabriella Reyes, Patrick Blackwell, Shenyang, and David Portillo.

A gala performances will honor Victoria de los Ángeles. The gala will feature such artists as Maria Agresta, Joyce DiDonato, Juliana Grigoryan, Sabina Puértolas, Marina Viotti, Iréne Theorin, and Dame Sarah Connolly, among others. Julius Drake performs at the piano.

Sondra Radvanovsky joins forces with pianist Anthony Manoli for a recital featuring music by Purcell, Duparc, Händel, Strauss, Bellini, Verdi, Donaudy, Heggie, and Giordano.

Soprano Anna Prohaska joins forces with violinist Isabelle Faust for “Kafka-Fragmente.”

Lise Davidsen and Freddie De Tommaso join forces for a recital alongside James Baillieu. The program includes music by Wagner, Verdi, Giordano, Puccini, Cilèa, Tchaikovsky, Charles, Ronald, and Tosti, among others.
