The Metropolitan Opera returns after a successful first half of the 2021–22 season and a planned February break.

During the spring portion of the season, the company is slated to present three new productions and 12 classic revivals that run from Feb. 28–June 11, 2022.

Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the company’s first-ever performances of the original five-act French version of Verdi’s “Don Carlos” in David McVicar’s new staging. The production will star tenor Matthew Polenzani in the title role, soprano Sonya Yoncheva, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, baritone Etienne Dupuis, and bass-baritones Eric Owens and John Relyea.

In April, theater and film director Simon Stone makes his Met debut with a new production of Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor.” Riccardo Frizza conducts soprano Nadine Sierra in the title role opposite tenor Javier Camarena.

The final new production will be the Met premiere of Brett Dean’s “Hamlet,” a contemporary take on Shakespeare’s masterpiece, with tenor Allan Clayton making his Met debut in the title role and soprano Brenda Rae as Ophelia.

Twelve revivals will take the Met stage in the spring. Soprano Anna Netrebko makes her anticipated return to the Met in the title role of Puccini’s “Turandot” while soprano Lise Davidsen sings two Strauss heroines, the title character of “Ariadne auf Naxos” and Chrysothemis in “Elektra,” opposite soprano Nina Stemme in the title role. Elza van den Heever makes her role debut as the title heroine of Handel’s “Rodelinda.” Meanwhile, Puccini’s “Tosca” returns with Aleksandra Kurzak in the title role opposite tenor Roberto Alagna.

Other highlights are Philip Glass’s “Akhnaten” with countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo and Stravinsky’s “The Rake’s Progress” with a cast starring tenor Ben Bliss and soprano Golda Schultz.
