Lise Davidsen Headlines Metropolitan Opera’s ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’ Revival

By Francisco Salazar

Richard Strauss’s “Ariadne auf Naxos” returns to the Metropolitan Opera for the first time since 2011.

The opera, based around an opera within an opera and featuring a unique blend of comedy and drama, will star Soprano Lise Davidsen, following her performances earlier this season as Eva in Wagner’s “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.”

Conductor Marek Janowski takes to the podium to lead Elijah Moshinsky’s production and will also feature soprano Brenda Rae as Zerbinetta, mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard as the Composer, tenor Brandon Jovanovich as Bacchus, and baritone Johannes Martin Kränzle as the Music Master. Baritone Sean Michael Plumb will make his company debut as Harlekin, and Wolfgang Brendel returns to the Met for the first time since 2007 in the spoken role of the Major-Domo.

“Ariadne auf Naxos” will be performed five times from March 1 through 17,  with the performance on March 12, 2022, transmitted live to cinemas around the globe as part of The Met: Live in HD series and broadcast over the Toll Brothers–Metropolitan Opera International Radio Network.

The March 1 and 12 performances will be broadcast live on Met Opera Radio on Sirius XM Channel 355.
