Carlos Chausson to Receive Medalla de Oro

Carlos Chausson will receive the Medalla de Oro for his work in the “Bellas Artes.”

The bass will be one of the 38 artists to receive the merit. Others include actresses Maribel Verdú, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, and Carmen Machi, actors Eduard Fernández and Josep María Pou, and poet Bernardo Atxaga.

Chausson is one of the most recognized Spanish singers of his generation.  He studied at the Escuela Superior de Canto in Madrid and at the University of Michigan. He made his stage debut in 1976 as Masetto in Mozart’s “Don Giovanniat the Opera of Las Palmas. Major theaters later engaged him in Vienna, Munich, and Berlin Staatsoper companies. He went on to perform at the Teatro alla Scala, Zurich Opera, San Francisco Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera.

He is well-known for his interpretations of the Bel Canto repertoire in works by Rossini and Donizetti. He is also known for his Mozart and Offenbach interpretations. He announced his retirement in 2022 performing “La Commedia è (in)finita” at the les Arts in Valencia alongside Ramon Gener.
