The Dallas Opera has appointed Matthew A. Epstein as the company’s new Senior Artistic Advisor.

Epstein, who will now consult on creative, artist, and repertoire programming, takes over the role previously occupied by David Lomelí, who was recently named the company’s Kern Wildenthal General Director and CEO.

“I can imagine no better person in this position than my friend and colleague Matthew Epstein,” Lomelí said, per an official press release. “Matthew’s contributions to modern opera are unparalleled. Many American singers, conductors, stage directors, and administrators owe their careers to him.”

Epstein has worked for more than 50 years across many of the world’s leading opera companies, serving as a consultant and advisor to The Santa Fe Opera from 1970 to 2018. For 25 years he held the roles of artistic consultant and later artistic director at Lyric Opera of Chicago. He also spent 38 years with Columbia Artists Management, Inc., including a term as director of CAMI Vocal LLC from 2005 to 2010.

Other prominent positions include general director of Welsh National Opera, artistic director of the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s BAM Opera, and an advisor to NHK Symphony Orchestra and Music Academy of the West, among other companies. He was inducted into OPERA America’s Opera Hall of Fame in October 2022.

Additionally, Epstein has also served as manager to vocal artists including Renée Fleming, Kathleen Battle, Frederica von Stade, Isabel Leonard, Susan Graham, Neil Shicoff, Sam Ramey, James Morris, Catherine Malfitano, and Ileana Cotrubas, as well as Dallas Opera figures Tatiana Troyanos, Magda Olivero, Elisabeth Söderström, Ruth Welting, Richard Stilwell, Evelyn Lear, Thomas Stewart, Rodney Gilfry, and Dame Felicity Lott.

Epstein’s tenure as The Dallas Opera’s Senior Artistic Advisor began earlier this month.
