Will ‘Maria’ Make Way for Leontyne Price Biopic? Da’Vine Joy Randolph Hopes So

By Francisco Salazar

Oscar winner Da’Vine Joy Randolph hopes the Maria Callas biopic “Maria” will open the door for her to make her Leontyne Price biopic.

Randolph told IndieWire at the “Through Her Lens” cocktail reception that the Pablo Larraín film has opened the door for opera biopics.

She said, “It’s ironic because Angelina Jolie has the Maria Callas biopic [‘Maria’] coming up. I’m a classically trained opera singer. I want to do a biopic of an opera singer.”

It’s not the first time that Randolph talks about wanting to make a biopic about Price. At the Oscar Luncheon on Feb. 12, 2024, the actress told Variety, “Be that I’m a classically trained opera singer, I really want to tell the story and the life of Leontyne Price. And I want to speak multiple languages and want to shoot it overseas and obviously be singing.”

Randolph attended Interlochen Arts Camp as a youth and studied theatre. She went to Temple University to focus on classical vocal performance and opera, but in her junior year, she switched concentrations to musical theatre. She won the Oscar for “The Holdovers in 2024.

Classical music has been the focus of many recent film productions over the past years including the Oscar nominated films “Tar” about a fictitious conductor and “Maestro,” about the life of Leonard Bernstein as well as “Chevalier” about the life of Chevalier d’Saint George. Netflix is set to release “Maria” this fall.

Leontyne Price is one of the first African American sopranos to receive international acclaim and was also the first African American to sing leading roles at many of the greatest theaters in the world.

Other singers could get biopics including Marian Anderson, Luciano Pavarotti, Enrico Caruso, and Joan Sutherland. What opera singer would you like to see get a biopic?
