‘Chevalier’ & ‘Carmen’ in Theaters on April 21

On April 21, two classical music-driven films are set to open in US theaters.

Chevalier” is based on the life of composer Joseph Bologne will be released by Searchlight Pictures while “Carmen,” which is a complete re-imagining of the opera that uses “selected lyrics” from the opera’s libretto sung in the original French by a choir as background, will be released by Sony Pictures Classics.

Chevalier

“Chevalier,” tells the story of Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, who rises to heights in French society as a composer before an ill-fated love affair. The film stars Kelvin Harrison Jr. in the lead role and is directed by Stephen Williams. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in the fall of 2022 and has received rave reviews.

Carmen

“Carmen,” tells a story through an experimental dreamscape featuring an original score and songs by Nicholas Britell, Taura Stinson, and Julieta Venegas. Academy Award nominee Paul Mescal stars as Aidan while Melissa Barerra stars as the titular character, Carmen. Renowned choreographer and dancer Benjamin Millepied directs the movie which played at the Toronto International Film Festival and the Miami International Film Festival.
