The Tallis Scholars & The King’s Singers Headline the 2025 Buxton International Festival

The Buxton International Festival has unveiled its 2025 season.

This article features opera and choral events only. A full cast list will be announced at a later date.

Ambroise Thomas’ “Hamlet” stars Gregory Feldmann in the title role. He is joined by Alastair Miles, Yewon Han, Richard Woodall, and Allison Cook, among others. Jack Furness directs and Adrian Kelly conducts the Orchestra of Opera North.

The Buxton Musical Society and Buxton Madrigal Singers present Schubert’s “Mass in C Major,” D452.

Performance Date: July 13, 2025

Opera hits are performed in “Opera in the Cavern.”

Performance Date: July 14 & 24, 2025

Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s “La descente d’Orphée aux enfers” is directed by Jeanne Pansard-Besson. Jonathan Darbourne serves as Music Director.

Performance Dates: July 14, 20, & 24, 2025

The Portrait Players perform vocal and instrumental music by Barbara Strozzi, Isabella Leonarda, Francesco Corbetta, and Francesca Caccini.

Performance Date: July 15, 2025

Up next is a double bill featuring Bernstein’s “Trouble in Tahiti” and Poulenc’s “La voix humaine.” Daisy Evans directs. Iwan Davies conducts the Buxton International Festival Orchestra.

Performance Dates: July 15, 19, 23, & 25, 2025

Roderick Williams and pianist Joseph Middleton present a series of recitals exploring the theme of “The Four Elements,” Earth, Air, Fire and Water. The first concert features English songs by Finzi, Ireland, Butterworth, Boyle, Britten, Gurney, Clarke, and Maconchy.

The King’s Singers present a program structured around Geoffrey Poole’s “Wymondham Chants,” interspersed with music by Byrd, Palestrina, Pärt, Duruflé and others.

Niamh O’Sullivan and pianist Joseph Middleton perform the second concert in “The Four Elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water” series. Works include songs by Schubert, Liszt, Duparc, Bizet, and others.

Performance Date: July 17, 2025

The King’s Singers invite singers to join them for a day learning and performing a selection of hand-picked repertoire, from some of their favorite renaissance works through to signature close-harmony arrangements. This event culminates in a short concert showcase.

Nazan Fikret, Jane Burnell, Conor Prendiville, Dan D’Souza, Owain Rowlands, Inguna Morozova, Joyce Henderson, and Jamie MacDougall perform in Mozart’s “The Impresario.” The Buxton International Festival Orchestra is conducted by Iwan Davies and Dame Jane Glover. Christopher Gillett directs.

Toby Spence and pianist Joseph Middleton give the third concert in the “The Four Elements” series. This concert features Beethoven’s song-cycle “An Die Ferne Geliebte,” songs by Schubert, Wolf, Fauré, Hahn, Finzi, and Britten.

Paula Murrihy and The English Concert perform works by Geminiani and Handel.

Performance Date: July 18, 2025

The final concert in the “The Four Elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water” series stars Mary Bevan and pianist Joseph Middleton.

Buxton Musical Society Chorus and Orchestra present Haydn’s “Nelson Mass” under the direction of Michael Williams MBE.

Performance Date: July 20, 2025

Claire Booth and pianist Andrew Matthews-Owen celebrate Jane Austen through the works of Jonathan Dove, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Schubert.

Performance Date: July 22, 2025

The 4th Annual Williams-Howard Prize Concert at the Buxton International Festival is held.

Performance Date: July 23, 2025

The Tallis Scholars present Palestrina’s greatest mass-settings, and a selection of his motets along with works by his contemporary, Victoria.

Performance Date: July 23, 2025

Jane Burnell and Dan D’Souza perform with pianist Alissa Firsova. Their program includes songs by Langer, Britten, Smirnov, and Firsova.

Performance Date: July 24, 2025

Mark Stone and pianist Stephen Barlow perform Schubert’s “Winterreise.”

Performance Date: July 25, 2025

Buxton Madrigal Singers close out the Festival with Charpentier’s “Messe de Minuitpresent.” Michael Williams MBE conducts.
