Teatro Alla Scala to Open 2026-27 Season with ‘Otello’
By Francisco SalazarThe Teatro alla Scala has announced that its 2026-27 season will open with Verdi’s “Otello.”
The opera has been absent from the company’s repertoire since the 2004-05 season, when the work was presented in the 2001 Graham Vick production. It was later supposed to open the 2020-21 season with Jonas Kaufmann and Marina Rebeka, but that production never came to fruition due to the pandemic.
For the 2026-27 season, the theater has not yet announced a cast or director for the production.
The Teatro alla Scala’s recent opening nights have included a Verdi opera such as “Attila,” “Don Carlo,” “La Forza del destino,” “Giovanna d’Arco,” and “Macbeth.”
However, this coming season, the Teatro alla Scala will open with Shostakovich’s “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk” and will include a cast led by Sara Jakubiak and Riccardo Chailly conducting.
