Obituary: Boris Pevzner Passes Away at 84

Conductor Boris Pevzner passed away at the age of 84.

Pevzner was born in Minsk in 1940. He attended the Krasnodar Musical College, the Novosibirsk State Conservatory, and Gnesin’s Institute.

In 1965, he started his career as a choirmaster of Leningrad Glinka Academic Chapel. Pevzner then began teaching at the Novosibirsk Conservatory. Here, he founded the Novosibirsk chamber chorus, the first of it’s kind in Siberia. In 1978, the ensemble was distinguished by the Golden medal at Bártok International Competition in Debrecen (Hungary) and Pevzner received the title of Best Conductor.

Pevzner served as Artistic Director and the lead conductor for the State Choral Chapel of Georgia from 1987 to 1990. While in Georgia, he also taught at the Tbilisi Conservatory. In 1991, founded the Moscow Choral Theatre, where he served as Artistic Director and conductor.

The Moscow Choral Theatre released several recordings including Mikhail Bronner’s “Long Return” and a collection of Russian Church Music.
