Alexander Pereira has announced the next two opening nights at the Teatro alla Scala.

The General director announced that the 2020-21 season will open with Verdi’s “Otello” starring Jonas Kaufmann, while the 2021-22 season will open with Verdi’s “Macbeth” headed by Anna Netrebko as Lady Macbeth.

Kaufmann has performed the role of Otello at the Bayerische Staatsoper and at the Royal Opera House to great acclaim.

Meanwhile, Netrebko has made Lady Macbeth one of her signature roles, performing it at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Metropolitan Opera, Berlin Staatsoper, Mariinsky Theatre, and Royal Opera.

The first performance of the 2021-22 season will mark Netrebko’s fifth opening night with the Teatro alla Scala. Next season’s season opener will mark Kaufmann’s third.

The Teatro alla Scala opens its 2019-20 season on Saturday, Dec. 7 with Netrebko starring in a new production of “Tosca” with Francesco Meli and Luca Salsi.
