The Royal Swedish Opera has been fined 3 million kronor, the equivalent of $300,000, following the death of a stage technician who fell around 13 meters from a balcony as he was carrying out work in the opera house.

The AP News is reporting that the company had been investigated and Prosecutor Jennie Nordin said the death could have been avoided.

According to the Swedish broadcast SVT, Nordin said that the Royal Swedish Opera “had failed to investigate and assess the risk of the work in question,” and “that the stage worker was allowed to perform the work in question despite the risk of falling over the railing.”

The employee Petter Sundelin died at the age of 57 on Sept. 21 after falling. The accident caused the Royal Swedish Opera to cancel performances including the original world premiere date of “Melancolia” as the investigation went on.
