Royal Swedish Opera Confirms World Premiere of ‘Melancolia’

The Royal Swedish Opera is set to world premiere “Melancolia” on Oct. 21, 2023.

The opera, based on Lars von Trier’s famed film, is composed by Mikael Karlsson and written by Royce Vabrek. It stars Lauren Snouffer, Rihab Chaieb, Anne Sofie von Otter, Jens Persson Hertzman, Ola Eliasson, Johan Edholm, and Mikael Stenbeck. Andrea Molina conducts. Sláva Daubnerová directs.

“‘Melancholia’s’ music is born out of noir jazz with a darkness that you can step into. It’s sensual, complex and dramatic with beats, synths and surround sound that will provide a large and modern soundscape,” Karlsson said in an official press statement issued by the company.

The opera was originally set to open on Oct. 7 but those performances were canceled due to a tragic accident. The opera will now run from Oct. 21 through Nov. 4, 2023.
