Per-Otto Johansson Extends Contract with Landestheater Detmold

Conductor Per-Otto Johansson has extended his contract as General Music Director at Landestheater Detmold until 2029.

Johansson joined the as Generalmusikdirektor at Landestheater Detmold Generalmusikdirektor from the 2022-23 Season. He has conducted new productions of “Madama Butterfly,” “Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk,” and Don Giovanni,” five orchestral concerts, and tours to Bregenz, Bern, and Zurich.

In a statement, he said, “It is with great pleasure that I can announce my confirmation as general music director at the State Theater Detmold until the playtime 2029. This wonderful journey began three years ago thanks to the trust that Georg Heckel placed in me, and I am happy that this trust is now confirmed by the new headmaster Kirsten Uttendorf, to whom I sincerely thank. Happy to continue to devote myself to making great music with this great and wonderful family. I thank everyone for the time we have spent together and for the future we will continue to share with each other. Special thanks to my wonderful orchestra, which always gives me joy, pride, support and trust.”

He has conducted more than 50 opera productions around the world and is known for his theatrical instinct and for achieving seamless communication between pit and stage. He has conducted at the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, the South Netherlands Philharmonic, the Arnhem Philharmonic, Royal Swedish Opera, and the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra in Sweden.
