Lucía Iglesias, Rafael Quirant, Inés López to Headline Historic Performances of ‘La Púrpura de la Rosa’ in Lima
By David SalazarThe Teatro Principal Manuel Segura in Lima will present a new production of Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco’s “La púrpura de la rosa” from June 14 to 18, 2026.
Jean Pierre Gamarra directs the staging, with Aurelio Tello leading the Orquesta Barroca del Teatro Municipal de Lima. The cast is headed by Spanish soprano Lucía Iglesias in the title role of Venus. She is joined by tenor Rafael Quirant as Adonis and mezzo-soprano Inés López as Marte.
“Doing my Latin American debut with a character of these dimensions and in such a relevant context is an enormous privilege,” Iglesias, who is making her Latin American debut, said, per an official statement. “This new production strikes the right balance between a contemporary reading and fidelity to Calderón’s text.”
Composed by Torrejón y Velasco to a libretto by Pedro Calderón de la Barca, “La púrpura de la rosa” is widely regarded as the first opera written and premiered in the Americas, having received its world premiere in Lima in 1701 during the Viceroyalty of Peru. The production marks the work’s return to the Peruvian capital 325 years after that premiere. The manuscript was recently declared a Cultural Heritage of the Nation by Peru’s Ministry of Culture.
The performances coincide with the annual conference of OLA – Ópera Latinoamérica, which will bring together leading opera institutions and specialized media from Spain and Latin America.
