Irena Portenko & Reinhard to Present ‘Winterreise’ at Carnegie Hall
By David SalazarPianist Irena Portenko and bass Reinhard Mayr will join forces to perform Schubert’s “Winterreise” at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on Jan. 28, 2025.
“‘Winterreise’ is a powerful experience, as it invites all of us to enter Schubert’s world during his final years. At the tender age of thirty, he was struggling to come to terms with his own mortality, yet still holding on to the exuberance of his youth. Set to Wilhelm Müller’s evocative poems, Schubert’s masterpiece is a tribute to his unwavering dedication. We can’t wait to join forces to transport our listeners to a point where ‘Winterreise’s’ intense emotions lie in wait,” Portenko told OperaWire.
Portenko also noted a special affinity for Mayr, who has performed at both of her “Auf den Spurren von Schubert” festival in Austria.
“He has a very special way to connect to the audience with his storytelling style, profound energy and authenticity of his interpretation I feel like he can open the doors to Schubert’s world for our audiences from a new perspective,” she noted.”
The showcase kicks off at 8 p.m. local time.
