Heidelberger Frühling Announces Programming for Liedfestival 2024

The third annual Heidelberger Frühling Liedfestival has released the details of its 2024 program.

This year’s theme is “Brahms and the Disorder of Lieder,” concluding Heidelberger Frühling’s season focus on Johannes Brahms.

“A song festival for everyone,” a mixed genre event opens the festival.

The Erlkings perform Lied in English with guitar, cello, tuba, and percussion.

Tenor Tae Hwan Yun, winner of the competition Heidelberger Frühling Wettbewerb “Das Lied“ 2023, and his piano partner Matthias Alteheld perform Lied settings by poet Heinrich Heine. Also on this concert, soprano Erika Baikoff makes her debut in Heidelberg with Lieder by Joseph Haydn to Arnold Schönberg with pianist James Baillieu.

Soprano Katharina Konradi, mezzo-soprano Catriona Morison, and Ammiel Bushakevitz at the piano will bring German and French Lied culture to explore the rivalry between the two vocal disciplines with duets by Brahms and others.

Soprano Sarah Maria Sun joins pianist Jan Philip Schulze and clarinetist Kilian Herold to showcase the full diversity of Lied with works ranging from Schubert to Brahms and Bernstein to Ligeti.

Baritone Konstantin Krimmel and pianist Ammiel Bushakevitz will juxtapose Brahms and Liszt with Romanian Lieder by Eusebius Mandyczewski.

Liedakademie alumni soprano Theresa Pilsl and baritone Jonas Müller perform the all-Brahms program accompanied by Leonard Becker on guitar.

Also a Liedakademie alumna, mezzo-soprano Ema Nikolovska performs alongside recent Grammy nominee and guitarist Sean Shibe. Nikolovska’s program “Orlando, der Zeitenwanderer” features works by Massenet to Bob Dylan with both classical and electric guitar.

The trio tRiaLog, consisting of mezzo-soprano Sarah Romberger, clarinettist Daniel Romberger and pianist Fil Liotis. They perform a composition commissioned by Heidelberger Frühling and the Kölner Philharmonie composer Philipp Maintz and poetry by Elisabeth Plessen.

Mezzo-soprano Patricia Nolz and her former teacher baritone Florian Boesch will once again focus on Brahms duets and his folk songs with pianist Andreas Fröschl.

The festival finale features the scholars of the Heidelberger Frühling Liedakademie final concert of the year. The program includes Lieder to texts from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn” by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, set to music by Johannes Brahms and others.
