The Salzburg Festival has announced its 2024 Season. Here is a look at the vocal performances.

Opera

Strauss’ “Caprricio” is set to be performed in concert form with Elsa Dreisig and Bo Skovhus as Countess and Count. The cast also includes Sebastian Kohlhepp (Flamand), Konstantin Krimmel (Olivier), Mika Kares (La Roche), Ève-Maud Hubeaux (Clairon), Regula Mühlemann (An Italian Singer) and Josh Levell (An Italian Tenor). Christian Thielemann conducts the Vienna Philharmonic.

Performance Dates: July 26-August 4, 2024

Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” returns to the festival in Romeo Castellucci’s production. Davide Luciano sings the title role with Nadezhda Pavlova, Federica Lombardi, Kyle Ketelsen, Dmitry Ulyanov, Julian Prégardien, Ruben Drole, and Anna El-Khashem. Teodor Currentzis conducts the Utopia Orchestra and the Utopia Choir.

Performance Dates: July 28-August 19, 2024

Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito” will return to the stage with Cecilia Bartoli, Daniel Behle, Alexandra Marcellier, Mélissa Petit, and Ildebrando D’Arcangelo. Robert Carsen directs while Gianluca Capuano conducts Les Musiciens du Prince – Monaco and Il Canto di Orfeo.

Mieczysław Weinberg’s “The Idiot” will be directed by Krzysztof Warlikowski. Ausrine Stundyte sings the lead role alongside Bogdan Volkov, Iurii Samoilov, and Vladislav Sulimsky. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla conducts the new production in Salzburg, leading the Vienna Philharmonic.

Performance Dates: August 2-23, 2024

Prokofiev’s “The Gambler” will be performed for the first time at the Salzburg Festival. The work will be directed by Peter Sellars and will star Peixin Chen, Asmik Grigorina, Sean Panikkar, Juan Francisco Gatell, and Violeta Urmana. Timur Zangiev makes his debut at the Salzburg Festival and at the helm of the Vienna Philharmonic.

French director Mariame Clément makes her Salzburg Festival debut by leading Offenbach’s “Les Contes d’Hoffmann.” The cast includes Benjamin Bernheim in the title role, Kathryn Lewek as four heroines, Christian Van Horn as the villains, and Kate Lindsey as La Muse.

Marc Minkowski leads the Vienna Philharmonic.

Lissette Oropesa and Stéphane Degout sing the lead roles in Thomas’ “Hamlet” with a cast that includes Ève-Maud Hubeaux, Jean Teitgen, Julien Henric, and Clive Bayley.

Bas Wiegers conducts Haas’ “Koma” with Sarah Aristidou, Sarah Brady, Andrew Watts, Peter Schöne, Karl Huml, and Raphael Sigling.

Luigi Dallapiccola “Il Prigioniero” and Luigi Nono’s “Il Canro Sospeso” will be performed in a double bill in concert. Maxime Pascal conducts a cast that includes Tanja Ariane Baumgartner, Georg Nigl, John Daszak, Caroline Wettergreen, Freya Apffelstaedt, Robin Tritschler, and Tobias Moretti.

Beat Furrer conducts his work “Begehren” with Sarah Aristidou and Christoph Brunner.

Concerts 

Bach’s Matthäus-Passion is set to star Julian Prégardien, Florian Boesch, Regula Mühlemann, Wiebke Lehmkuhl, Andrey Nemzer, David Fischer, and Matthias Winckhler. Teodor Currentzis conducts.

Peter Dijkstra conducts the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Camerata Salzburg, Krassimir Sterev, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, and Max Hanft Klavier in a program of music by Arvo Part, Sofia Gubaidulina, and Karl Amadeus Hartmann.

Vox Luminis XL will be led by Lionel Meunier in a performance of music by Tallis and Striggio.

Handel’s “Israel in Egypt” will be conducted by John Eliot Gardiner.

Sophia Burgos will be led by Sylvain Cambreling in a program of music by George Crumb, Claud Vivier, and Haas.

The music of Georg Friedrich Haas, Antoine Brumel, and George Crumb make up the program conducted by Pete Phillips. The Tallis Scholars, Gunde Jäch-Micko, and Joonas Ahonen perform.

Elionor Martínez, Marianne Beate Kielland, Daniel Folqué, Ferran Mitjans, and Mauro Borgioni star in a program entitled Te Deum. Jordi Savall conducts.

Christina Landshamer, Elsa Benoit, Tilman Lichdi, and the Wiener Singverein perform music by Brahms and Mendelssohn. The Johannes Prinz Choreinstudierung and Wiener Philharmoniker will be conducted by Herbert Blomstedt.

Mozart’s Missa in C-Moll will be performed by Katharina Konradi, Ana Maria Labin, Krystian Adam, and Krešimir Stražanac. The Collegium Vocale 1704 and Collegium 1704 will be conducted by Václav Luks.

Jordi Savall conducts Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8 and 9. The soloists will include Lina Johnson, Olivia Vermeulen, Martin Platz, and Manuel Walser.
