By Francisco Salazar

And we’re back for this week’s edition of the major CD and DVD releases on offer. Those looking for legendary performances will be thrilled by some of this week’s releases. But there are also two solo albums of great interest. Let’s check it out.

Mahler Pioneers

SOMM RECORDINGS announces “Mahler Pioneers,” a major addition to the Mahler catalog with the first commercial releases of historic performances of “Das klagende Lied,” Symphony No.4, and the Adagio from the Tenth Symphony.

The two-disc set also features interviews with the legendary conductor Leopold Stokowski and former New York Philharmonic Orchestra timpanist Alfred Friese about their memories of Mahler in rehearsal.

Recorded live in London’s Royal Festival Hall on May 13, 1956, “Das klagende Lied” is heard in its first-ever British performance with Walter Goehr conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, Goldsmiths’ Choral Union, and three soloists; soprano Joan Sutherland, tenor Peter Pears, and contralto Norma Procter.

Inez Matthews sings Schubert

Parnassus Records presents its latest release in the “Black Swans” series, returning to international availability a pioneering recording of Schubert’s best-known song cycles, “Die schöne Mullein” and “Winterreise,” sung by American soprano Inez Matthews accompanied by Lowell Farr. The recordings, newly restored and remastered, reveal an artist with an exceptionally beautiful voice and stunning diction, bringing vitality and insight to Schubert’s dramatic and demanding songs.

Ildebrando Pizzetti: Three Orchestral Preludes for Oedipus Rex by Sophocles; Igor Stravinsky: Oedipus Rex

Dynamic releases a DVD of works by Pizzetti and Stravinsky that involve the subject matter of “Oedipus Rex.” The DVD is conducted by Daniele Gatti and showcases performances by Ekaterina Semenchuk, AJ Glueckert, Alex Esposito, Massimo Popolizio, and Adolfo Corrado. The performance was recorded by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.

Schubert: Die Schöne Müllerin

Konstantin Krimmel and Daniel Heide record Schubert’s famed song cycle on Alpha. It marks the baritone’s third recording for Alpha Classics.

Mahler Songs

Dame Sarah Connolly and Joseph Middleton release the first of a series of curated works that will champion the complete piano-accompanied Lieder of Mahler.
