Cape Town Opera Announces ‘SHORTS: A Festival of Short Operas’ 2025

Cape Town Opera, in collaboration with Opera UCT, has officially announced its second edition of “SHORTS: A Festival of Short Operas.”

Audiences can expect four one-act operas to take place throughout the festival, as well as a Q & A, a workshop performance of a new opera, and opera film screenings. Allegra Bernacchioni leads production design with video design by Kirsti Cumming and lighting design by Luke Ellenbogen. Events are held at the Wave Theatre.

Victoria Stevens directs Béla Bartok’s “Bluebeard’s Castle.” Baritone William Berger sings the title role, with Siphamandla Moyake as Judith. Musical director Jan Hugo will accompany at the piano.

Performance Dates: March 7, 9, 15, & 16, 2025

“Atlas of Remote Islands” by Alan Olejniczak is up next. The cast featuring Cape Town Opera’s Judith Neilson Young Artists, as well as Marcelle Steinmetz. Jan Hugo serves as musical director and Nathan Lewis at the piano. Jackï Job directs.

Alida Scheepers stars in “Triptych, Women at War,” directed by Fred Abrahamse and Marcel Meyer is up next. José Dias serves as the musical director and pianist.

Opera UCT presents a double bill of Robert Schumann’s “Frauenliebe und Leben” and Leoš Janáček’s “The Diary of One Who Vanished,” directed by Christine Crouse with musical direction by Jeremy Silver. “Frauenliebe und Leben” features Molly Dzangare, and “Diary of One Who Vanished” stars Vuyisa Xipu and Nica Reinke.
