Cape Town Opera’s Foundation Studio Kicks Off the 2025 Season
By Afton MarkayCape Town Opera’s Foundation Studio is off to an exciting start in the 2025 season.
In early Jan., Cape Town Opera began the new year with its Bel Canto Boot Camp. Vocal coach Derrick Goff led the Boot Camp, which took online and in-person. Sessions covered a variety of essential topics designed to elevate vocal mastery.
The company’s Foundation Studio is designed to empower high schoolers who do not have a background in music. Last year’s attendees, sopranos Siphokazi Diamond and Nonelelwa Ntsamba (pictured left to right), have chosen to further their opera studies at the South African College of Music at the University of Cape Town.
Later this year, Cape Town Opera will present “SHORTS- A Festival of Pocket Operas.” These operas of an hour or less are geared toward new operagoers. The festival’s workshops feature a new opera and showcase of newly written South African libretti. Two operas are produced in collaboration with Opera UCT. “SHORTS” is scheduled for March 7-17 at the Wave Theatre.
