Voice Afire will present “The Spanish Connection — Music of the Americas,” a recital featuring tenor José Heredia, mezzo-soprano Anna Tonna, and pianist Amber Scherer, this March.
The program pairs the folk-inflected modernist works of Argentine composer Alberto Ginastera with songs by Canadian-American composer Ray Luedeke set to the love poetry of Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, drawn from Luedeke’s opera-cabaret “My Life with Pablo Neruda.” Solo piano works by both composers, performed by Scherer, frame the recital.
“I hope audiences take away a deep appreciation for the rich and vibrant tapestry of Latin American vocal music and poetry, by showcasing Ginastera, Pablo Neruda and their influence on contemporary American composers, thus emphasizing the universality of this repertoire and literature. This heritage belongs to all of us! It is world heritage, not just for Latin Americans, their diaspora or otherwise,” Tonna told OperaWire.
The first performances takes place on March 15 at 3 p.m. at the National Opera Center’s Scorca Hall, 330 Seventh Avenue with the latter show set for on March 21 at 7:00 p.m. at the Tenri Cultural Institute, 43A West 13th Street in Greenwich Village.
