Victorian Opera & Lisa Gasteen National Opera Program Cancel ‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’

By Francisco Salazar

The Victorian Opera and the Lisa Gasteen National Opera Program have announced the cancellation of Otto Nicolai’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at Melbourne Recital Centre’s Elisabeth Murdoch Hall.

Performances were originally scheduled for Dec. 3-4 and were set to be presented in partnership with the Brisbane-based Lisa Gasteen National Opera Program.

According to the Victorian Opera, the increased uncertainty regarding Australia’s border restrictions, ongoing national lockdowns, and a high proportion of the cast and creative team traveling from interstate, the company decided to cancel. In a press release, The Victorian Opera and the Lisa Gasteen National Opera Program noted that it will continue to explore opportunities to collaborate in future years.

The production is the latest postponement or cancelation for the company as it postponed Richard Mills’ new opera, “The Butterfly Lovers” and canceled “Voss.”
