Tri-Cities Opera to Present ‘Monkey and Francine in the City of Tigers’

By Francisco Salazar

Tri-Cities Opera is set to present the original children’s opera “Monkey and Francine in the City of Tigers,” with music by Kamala Sankaram and libretto by David Johnston.

The opera, which will be available for home streaming online through April 11 for $8, fuses stories and music from India, China, and West Africa. The original children’s opera tells the story of Monkey and his brainy sister Francine, who must learn to work together and use their smarts to escape the hungry Crocodile and outwit the greedy Lord of the Tigers.

The work combines musical styles from Bollywood, to Latin, to Jazz and features relatable contemporary language and characters. The cast includes soprano Erin Alcorn in the role of Francine; tenor Quinn Bernegger as Monkey; bass-baritone Langelihle Mngxati as Monkey King, Lord Tiger, and Crocodile; and mezzo-soprano Amanda Staub as Monkey Queen and Lord Tiger.
