Timothée Chalamet Controversy Motivates Opera Companies to Announce Discount Codes

By Francisco Salazar

After the Seattle Opera announced a Timothée Chalamet discount that trolled the actor’s “losing 14 cents” quote, opera companies have joined the ride announcing their own discount codes.

Hawaii Opera Theatre announced a 25 percent discount for its world premiere opera “Kamalehua: The Sheltering Tree.” The company said, “We heard the latest #opera news and we simply can’t agree. Especially with how fast tickets are selling to our WORLD PREMIERE of ‘Kamalehua: The Sheltering Tree.’ And thanks to Timothee’s recent interview, YOU TOO can see an opera… at a discount! This weekend only, get 25% off tix to HOT’s world premiere opera. Not only do people care, but new operas are coming out every year. Operas that illustrate modern and timeless stories. Operas that highlight and platform under-told stories. Operas that push the boundaries of what makes an opera. And more. Opera is not dead. Opera is forever. @tchalamet go check one out. After all, not everyone gets a discount code named after them!”

Meanwhile, Pittsburgh Opera announced a 30 percent discount code with a caption that said, “No one likes the school bully! Get 30% off tix tomorrow in honor of TIMMI.”

Meanwhile Enrique Mazzola, Music Director of Lyric Opera of Chicago took to social media to announce the code with a caption, “My most cordial invitation for @tchalamet to a show at @lyricopera! Respectfully, Enrique.”

Even the Oscar nominated film “Viva Verdi!” joined in and announced a 40 percent code for streaming of the film. The caption read, “Timothee, you’re taking a lot of heat for saying nobody cares about opera, but we know you meant well, and we are here to help turn all this into a net WIN for opera! The Oscar® Nominated ‘VIVA VERDI!’ is all about a retirement home in Italy for opera singers and is nominated for Best Original Song. In your honor, we are offering 40% off with code CHALAMET40.”

The comments that put Chalamet in the spotlight over the past week were, “I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey, keep this thing alive, even though no one cares about this anymore.’” He then added, “all respect to the ballet and opera people out there. I just lost 14 cents in viewership.”
