‘The Stone God’ to World Premiere This November

By David Salazar

Composer Nicholas Michael Smith OBE will premiere his new opera “The Stone God” at the Bloomsbury Theater.

The 90-minute opera features six scenes based on the children’s story by Chinese author and director Hong Ying, who is a collaborator on the project.

The cast includes Yixuan Qian, Xiaomin Cheng, Cicely He, Heming Li, Samuel Lom, Bradyn Debysingh, and Wiktoria Wizner. Justin Lavender is the music director and Alison Marshall is the stage director. The production features projections by Toby Marshall.

“As musical director it’s thrilling to be entrusted with the world premiere of such a delightful opera as The Stone God.  Being a rural community company, Arcadian Opera is ideal for this community-based story.  Nick Smith has brought Hong Ying’s magical tale to colourful musical life.  What a privilege,” Lavender told OperaWire.

The “Stone God,” set for Nov. 1 – 3, 2024, will be paired with the composer’s “The Girl from The French Fort.”
