The Gesualdo Six will present “The Death of Gesualdo” on Jan. 16 and 17, 2025.
The theatrical concert explores the life and music of Carlo Gesualdo, the Renaissance composer notorious for murdering his wife and celebrated for chromatic writing far ahead of its time.
“Gesualdo’s tortured mind led him into a life of violence and suffering, concluding in appalling tales of sorcery and flagellation. However shockingly macabre his biography is, the Prince of Venosa’s malignant narcissism can be traced to key incidents from his upbringing in the zero-sum game of Catholic politics,” said director Bill Barclay, who will reunite with the ensemble for the project, per an official press release.
The production features six singers, six actors, and a puppet, unfolding as a series of tableaux vivants.
The creative team includes Olivier Award-winning choreographer Will Tuckett, puppet artist Janni Younge, and American costume designer Arthur Oliver. The production is co-commissioned by St Martin-in-the-Fields, the National Centre for Early Music (York), and Music Before 1800 (New York).
