New Sussex Opera will present Charpentier’s “David and Jonathan” in a new English translation by Christopher Cowell this October.

The production is set to open on Oct. 11 at the Windmill Theatre in Hove before touring to London’s Cadogan Hall on Oct. 20. The production marks the first time the opera has been staged in London and the South East.

The cast features tenor Harun Ellis Tekin and countertenor Tom Lilburn in the title roles, with baritone Massimo Modoni as Saul, bass Daniel Chomiak as Achis and Samuel, and Ukrainian mezzo-soprano Nadiia Chaichenko as the Witch. The New Sussex Opera Chorus will also perform.

NSO will collaborate with the period-instrument Bellot Ensemble, the New Generation Baroque Ensemble for 2025-27, a scheme run jointly by BBC Radio 3, the Royal College of Music, and the National Centre for Early Music.

The tour also marks the launch of the Chalk Cliff Trust NSO Emerging Artists program, supported by the Laidlaw Opera Trust, in which emerging singers take on smaller named roles and receive one-to-one coaching from the music director and director. The Cadogan Hall performance on Oct. 20 will be preceded by a pre-concert talk from the creative team with broadcaster Donald Macleod.
