Revels to Present The Gesualdo Six in ‘Secret Byrd’

By David Salazar

Revels is set to present “Secret Byrd” from Oct. 31 – Nov. 2, 2024 at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Boston.

The event, which is produced by Concert Theatre Works and directed / created by Bill Barclay, features The Gesualdo Six as they celebrate the 400-year legacy of the famed English composer William Byrd.

“Revels is thrilled to bring ‘Secret Byrd to Boston! ‘Secret Byrd’ excites us because it presents the highest level of musical artistry liberated from the concert hall, made immediate and visceral through theatricality that renders history palpable, “ said Revels’ Artistic Director Debra Wise per an official press release. “Audience members are invited into a liminal space – as both voyeurs and participants, projecting themselves into the past and back again This is central to what Revels strives to accomplish: to connect us through time via song and shared experience.”

Byrd was famously a “recusant Catholic” who would write secret masses during the Reformation. The ceremonies would be held in people’s homes and were led by “smuggled priests and hidden Catholic artifacts.”
