Royal Opera & Jette Parker Artists to Present Telemann’s ‘Pimpione’

By David Salazar

The Royal Opera and Jette Parker Artists will present Telemann’s “Pimpione” at the Linbury Theatre starting on May 2, 2025.

The work, which is written for just two singers, will star Isabela Díaz as Vespetta and Grisha Martirosyan in the title role, both Jette Parker Artists. “Pimpione” explores the marriage of the two characters with Vespetta slowly feeling suffocated by the dynamics and demanding a better and more equal relationship.

“Alongside its lighthearted humour, this rarely performed gem grapples with profound issues of power, class, and gender,” said Sophie Gilpin, Jette Parker Artist and the stage director for the opera, per an official press release. “Vespetta’s journey speaks to a timeless struggle for empowerment and autonomy, while Pimpinone experiences the discomfort of losing control in a world that’s shifting beneath his feet. It’s exciting to find such contemporary relevance in the delightful absurdity of a 300-year-old opera, allowing us to laugh while reflecting on how much – and how little – has changed.”

Conducting the Orchestra of the English National Opera will be Peggy Wu, another Jetter Parker Artist.

The production runs through May 17, 2025.
