
Obituary: Elizabeth Russo Dies at 64
By Francisco SalazarAmerican mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Russo has died at the age of 64.
According to reports, Russo died of cancer.
Born in 1960, Russo studied singing at Fordham University and Western Connecticut State University and went on to win top prizes in 1998 and 1999 in the Classical Productions vocal competition at Carnegie Hall. She was also a finalist in the Operafest of New Hampshire competition and the Rising Star Opera Competitions in New York City.
She went on to spend a period of her career in London and went on to make her Fulham Opera debut as Fricka in “Das Rheingold.” In 2012, she returned for the same role in “Die Walküre” and Wagner’s complete Ring Cycle in 2014.
When she returned to the United States, the mezzo appeared with the Worcester Chorus in Massachusetts and later appeared with the Dessoff Choirs of New York City.
For 25 years, she served as a cantor and soloist at Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church in Greenwich, CT. She was also member of the Connecticut Choral Society.
Russo was also a member of the National Opera Center of America in New York City and taught Musical Theater and vocal technique at the NYC Singer’s Forum, Fordham University, New York University, and the Chautauqua Institute.
Russo’s burial took place on March 20 in Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church.
