Roulette Announces 45th Spring Season

Roulette, a space for promotion and presentation of contemporary experimental performing arts in Brooklyn has announced its 45th spring season.

For the purposes of this article only classical vocal events are included.

Lila Meretzky’s “Songs at Night” large-scale new song cycle of the poems of Yiddish-language poet Anna Margolin makes its world premiere. Shelley Washington’s “A Kind of Lung” and Dylan Mattingly’s “The History of Life in Reverse” are also on the program. The Contemporaneous ensemble, soprano Lucy Dhegrae, and pianist Milena Gligić perform.

Performance Date: February 27, 2024

“Beautiful Trouble,” a five-act live performance by Natacha Diels and JACK Quartet. Each act describes a particular mini-plot in the style of television’s “The Twilight Zone” or Robert Ashley’s TV opera “Perfect Lives.”

Tenor Tomás Cruz performs in Martin Nevin’s “Scratch at the Same Table.”

Performance Date: March 18, 2024

Soprano Alice Teyssier serves as soloist in composer and pianist Gordon Beeferman’s “ALERTA!” The program consists of his recent solo, chamber, and vocal music.

Excerpt from “My Dear Siegfried ” by David Behrman features baritone Thomas Buckner.

Performance Date: April 11, 2024

Soprano Sylvia Bloom, mezzo-soprano Isabelle Ganz, tenor Brian McCorkle, and baritone Thomas Meglioranza solo in Jeffrey Schanzer’s “The Past Is Present.” The Cantata focuses on Holocaust survivors and their children. All of the text is taken from the oral testimony of members of Jeffrey’s family. The visuals are taken from old family photographs as well as original artwork by Noah Bogan, who is also the son of survivors.

A new production of Robert Ashley’s 1993 opera “Foreign Experiences” for seven voices and pre-recorded electronic orchestra stars Gelsey Bell, Kayleigh Butcher, Bonnie Lander, Brian McCorkle, Paul Pinto, Dave Ruder, and Aliza Simons. Tom Hamilton directs.

The International Contemporary Ensemble and the Center for Practice and Research in Science and Music (PRiSM) give six world premieres including the works of composer Emily Howard and more.

Performance Date: May 16, 2024

The US premiere of Elliott Sharp’s opera “Die Grösste Fuge” stars bass-baritone Nicholas Isherwood. The composer provides electronics in collaboration with the DGF String Quartet.
