Contemporaneous Ensemble Presents Lila Meretzky’s ‘Songs at Night’

By Afton Wooten

The Contemporaneous Ensemble is set to present the world premiere of NYC-based composer, educator, and visual artist Lila Meretzky’s large-scale song cycle, “Songs at Night.”

Meretzky was commissioned by the Contemporaneous ensemble to expand upon her “Four Songs at Night.” The new work draws on text by Yiddish-language poet Anna Margolin who first published her poetry through a multitude of Yiddish newspapers and press in the 20th century. “Songs at Night” is scored for for soprano and sinfonietta. Individual performers will be announced at a later date. Camilla Tassi seres as the production designer.

The program will also include Shelley Washington’s “A Kind of Lung” and a premiere excerpt from Dylan Mattingly’s newest project with librettist Thomas Bartscherer, “The History of Life in Reverse.”

The premiere takes places at Roulette Intermedium on Feb. 27 starting at 8 pm. There will be a live stream of the performance.
