Dutch National Opera to Present ‘Cherry Town’

By Francisco Salazar

Shostakovich’s “Cherry Town” is set to be performed at the Dutch National Opera.

The new production by Dutch National Opera will be directed by Jakop Ahlbom and will include movement and dance, developed with Marco Gerris, artistic director of ISH Dance Collective and choreographer.

The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra will perform under the direction of Bassem Akiki.

The cast will star Alexander de Jong, Nina van Essen, Leòn Ali Çifteci, Ella Taylor, Michael Wilmering, Thomas Oliemans, Madison Horman, and Martin Mkhize.

In a statement Jakop Ahlbom said, “The music of ‘Cherry Town’ is light and accessible. Shostakovich blends humour with nostalgia, lightness with longing. That’s a combination I also see in many of my own inspirations, like the films of Buster Keaton. It’s precisely this mix that makes Cherry Town an inviting first introduction to opera.”

“Cherry Town” will be performed between Oct. 8 and 20, 2026.
