Plácido Domingo to Receive Giovanni Verga Award

Plácido Domingo is set to receive the Giovanni Verga award in 2022.

The singer will receive the prize as a career tribute, which will also coincide with the 40th anniversary of Franco Zeffirelli’s “Cavalleria rusticana;” Domingo had starred in that production.

The 2022 prize will also coincide with Verga’s 100th year since his death in 1922. The tenor was well known for his interpretations in the Italian Verismo repertoire. He was also an author and was known for his books, “I Malavoglia,” “Mastro Don Gesualdo,” and “Cavalleria rusticana,” which inspired Mascagni’s opera.

Verga’s centennial celebration will also include a series of activities about Verga’s literature, theater and music performances, film festivals, photo expositions, and cultural encounters.

Domingo next returns to Moscow for a gala performance before singing a concert tour in Mexico. He also returns to Paris and Palermo for Verdi operas.
