By Afton Markay

Performa 2025 Biennial has unveiled its programming for its 20th anniversary season.

Over the course of three weeks Performa 2025 Biennial will bring together a lineup of artists from a wide range of backgrounds, generations, and disciplines to New York City. This year eight new commissions will be presented.

Artist duo Neringa Černiauskaitė and Ugnius Gelguda, working together as Pakui Hardware, will take part in the “Lithuanian Pavilion Without Walls,” exploring the evolving relationship between technology and the human body. Their new work presents an AI therapy session structured as a Classical Greek drama. This work features an immersive sonic journey and a community choir performance.

Founding Director and Chief Curator of Performa, RoseLee Goldberg said in press release, “The Performa 2025 Biennial will continue our mission of showcasing how performance has become increasingly central to contemporary artistic practices. This landmark edition will celebrate both the legacy and future of live performance as a dynamic force in art today. Since the beginning, we have been dedicated to commissioning new performance and providing artists with full curatorial and production support and expertise to realize their visions. As we reflect on 20 years of unforgettable commissions and global collaborations that have altered the contemporary art landscape, this anniversary edition is a bold statement about the future of live art in New York and beyond.”

Since its conception in 2004, Performa has transformed the landscape of contemporary performance, bridging visual art and live performance through its visionary biennial and pioneering commissioning process. Performa has presented over 850 artists at more than 250 venues, redefining how performance art is created, experienced, and preserved.

Performa 2025 Biennial is set to take place in New York City from Nov. 1–23.
