Sopranos Katy Avery and Liz Lang will present three world premiere commissions in “This Silent Music.”

The interdisciplinary performance, conceived for Philadelphia’s James Turrell Skyspace, is set to take place August 8, 2026, at 7:30 p.m.

“At the End of It All,” composed by LJ White with poetry by Nicole Young-Martin, incorporates sonified black hole data from astrophysicist Becka Phillipson. “Eucalyptus,” composed by Mieke Doezema with poetry by Jonathan Sypert, confronts ecological loss through natural soundscapes. “This Silent Music,” composed by Alex Wakim with poetry by George Abud, melds Arabic tonality and instrumentation with Western technique. Avery, Lang, percussionist Darren Lin, and oud player Harvey Valdes perform across the three works.

“This Silent Music was born from the feeling that space and time have become luxuries, and with them, a growing distrust in our own perception of the world,” said Lang, one of the project’s creators. “A James Turrell Skyspace asks you to look at something as familiar as the sky until you begin to experience it differently. We wanted to build the music the same way, not to reject the conventions of a classical concert, but to invite audiences into a different relationship with listening. I hope people leave more willing to linger with uncertainty, more trusting of their own attention, and perhaps more connected to one another.”
