By David SalazarAlbuquerque’s Opera Southwest is set to present the world premiere of “Llantos 1492” on Feb. 16 – 23, 2025.
The new work by Adam del Monte is a flamenco-fused opera set during the Spanish Inquisition and the fall of Granada. At the core of the story is a Jewish lawyer, Youssef Biboldo, who challenges the Inquisition, leading to greater persecution for him, his family, and a group of Roma people.
Headlining the cast is Brian James Myer as Youssef. Alongside him, audiences will experience the talents of Ricardo Ceballos, Oriana Fallas, Barbara Martinez, José Cortes, Dane Suarez, Javier Ortiz, and Vicente Griego.
Anthony Barrese conducts the showcase, which will be directed by Octavio Cardenas.
“We are honored to be collaborating with the National Institute of Flamenco on Llantos 1492. They are providing the dancers and choreography, which are vital to this production,” said Tony Zancanella, executive director of Opera Southwest, in an official press release. “It is really fitting that the world’s first flamenco opera is having its premiere here in Albuquerque, known as the Flamenco Capital of North America.”
