Opera Southwest to Perform Spanish Version of Händel’s ‘Messiah’

By Francisco Salazar

Opera Southwest is set to present The New Mexico Symphonic Chorus performing Handel’s “Mesías” in a new Spanish translation.

The concert will make use of a new translation commissioned by the Contra Costa Bach Society and will see the New Mexico Symphonic Chorus return to the company following past collaborations including “Pearl Fishers” in 2014 and “Aida” in 2015.

Going forward, OSW plans to lead the NMSC in a renewed focus on major symphonic choral works with orchestra produced at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

The “Mesias” will be performed on Nov. 22 with Maestro Anthony Barrese stepping into the role of Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, while Aaron Howe, Opera Southwest’s Chorus Master, will serve as Chorus Master of the NMSC. Soloists for Händel’s masterpiece will include soprano Cecilia Violetta López, mezzo-soprano Claudia Chapa, tenor Dane Suarez, and baritone Jean Carlos Rodriguez.
