Opera Orlando Launches SINGS Initiative for Young Singers

By Nicolas Quiroga

Opera Orlando has launched a training program for young singers entitled the Summer Institute for the Next Generation of Singers, (SINGS).

SINGS is designed specifically for high school students with inclinations to be professional lyrical singers. SINGS members will engage with several workshops and coachings focused on vocal development, professional presence, acting, yoga, vocal health seminars, vocal anatomy sessions and individual music work with training from Opera Orlando staff. Students will participate in a masterclass, featuring internationally renowned Metropolitan Opera tenor Curtis Rayam, Grammy-winning baritone Gabriel Preisser, and soprano Susan Helman Spatafora.

The five-day program will culminate in a public concert.

“Opera Orlando developed this program to be an informative and professional-level week of training to help high school singers navigate and prepare for college auditions, while also giving them insight into how best to build a lifelong career in classical music,” said program director Sarah Purser in a press release. “I am looking forward to the students growing together as an ensemble throughout the week, as well as achieving their own personal goals, improving their musicianship, and gaining the confidence needed to take their career to the next level.”

The program will take place between July 26 and 30, 2021.
