Opera Colorado to Present ‘Turandot’ with Kara Shay Thomson

By Francisco Salazar

Opera Colorado is set to close its 2022-23 Season with Puccini’s “Turandot.”

The opera, which is set to be performed between May 6 and 14 at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, will be Opera Colorado’s first production of “Turandot.”

Soprano Kara Shay Thomson will lead the cast in the title role alongside tenor Jonathan Burton as Calaf. They will be joined by Craig Verm, Alex Monsoori, Martin Bakari, Janai Brugger, and Young Bok Kim. Ari Pelto conducts the production by Aria Umezawa, who is exploring ways of involving the AAPI community on stage in the production to contextualize Puccini’s fantasy world and elucidate the impact of producing these types of pieces.

Regarding the production, Greg Carpenter, the company’s artistic director said, “An opulent production of ‘Turandot,’ as massive in spectacle as it is in sound, is the perfect way to end what has been a truly memorable 40th Anniversary Season. Audiences can expect one of the largest shows they’ve seen at the Ellie in years, with an all-star cast and an unprecedented number of talented artists featured in our Opera Colorado Orchestra and Chorus. We are also excited to work with director Aria Umezawa to ensure the issues surrounding this production are brought to light and all members of the Denver community feel welcome.”
