Music of Remembrance to Stream ‘Tres Minutos’ As Part of Hispanic Heritage Month

By David Salazar

As part of Hispanic Heritage Month, Music of Remembrance is set to stream its production of “Tres Minutos.”

The one-act opera by Mexican-American composer Nicolas Benavides and librettist Marella Martin Koch tells the story of Nila and her brother Diego who are separated at the U.S. border and must contend with questions of identity and belonging.

“’Tres minutos’ comes at a time in our country when we have a refugee crisis, and we have the choice to make it better or make it worse,” Benavides said about his work in an official press statement.

The work premiered in May 2022 but will now run online between Sept. 15 and Oct. 15. It stars Vanessa Isiguen, José Rubio, and Brendan Tuohy. Erich Parce directs while Benavides conducts.
