Moody Center for the Arts to Present ‘Everything Rises’

By Nicolas Quiroga

The Moody Center for the Arts will present “Everything Rises,” a multimedia musical work, on April 14 and 15, 2023, at Lois Chiles Moody’s Studio Theatre. Featured artists include Grammy Award-winning violinist Jennifer Koh and bass-baritone Davóne Tines.

Developed over the course of several years by an all-BIPOC team of creatives, comprising composer Ken Ueno and director Alexander Gedeon, “Everything Rises” focuses on connection, resonance, and the establishment of a new artistic space.

In “Everything Rises,” Jennifer Koh and Davóne Tines discuss their personal and artistic journeys, as well as the influence of their family histories. They confront the challenges of navigating a culture with a legacy of racism while reclaiming their own stories and identities as creators, performers, and individuals.

Globally renowned for her dazzling virtuosity and technical confidence, Koh explores and exploits a broad and eclectic repertoire, promoting equity and inclusion in classical music. She has premiered more than one hundred works with top orchestras from around the world, such as the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles, Helsinki, Minnesota, London Philharmonics, and Rai, among many more.

Tines is known for examining current social issues by combining opera, contemporary classical music, spirituals, gospel, and protest songs. The bass-baritone has performed on many of the world’s greatest stages and is also a visiting professor at Harvard University.
