Verdi’s “Aida” will be the next HD in the Metropolitan Opera Live in HD series.
The new production of “Aida” opened on Dec. 31 to controversy and mixed reviews with OperaWire noting, “Mayer’s production was passable, especially by his standards. Whether the execution justified its own existence is certainly a question for those managing the precious purses of the Met Opera’s budget.”
The Michael Mayer-directed production will be shown in movie theaters on Jan. 25 and will Angel Blue in the title role. She will be joined by Piotr Beczała as Radamès, who was at the center of controversy on New Year’s Eve for performing well below his standards while nursing illness; mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi as Amneris; baritone Quinn Kelsey as Amonasro; bass Morris Robinson as the King; and bass Dmitry Belosselskiy as Ramfis, also sick on New Year’s Eve. Beczała and Belosselskiy were both replaced for performances following New Year’s.
Yannick Nézet-Séguin will conduct the production.
This will mark the fourth time “Aida” is performed live in HD following performances that featured such divas as Violetta Urmana, Anna Netrebko, and Liudmyla Monastyrska.
Gary Halvorson will direct the Live in HD presentation for cinemas, and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and musician Rhiannon Giddens will host the transmission, sharing exclusive behind-the-scenes content and interviews during the intermission.
