
Soundstreams to Present ‘Celebrating Steve Reich at 90’
By David SalazarSoundstreams will open its 44th season with “Celebrating Steve Reich at 90,” a concert marking the composer’s 90th birthday.
The showcase, set for Oct. 6 at Koerner Hall in Toronto, will feature the North American premiere of “In All Your Ways.” The piece was co-commissioned by Soundstreams alongside the Barbican Centre, Carnegie Hall, Cal Performances, the Philharmonie de Paris, the Edinburgh International Festival, the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Grafenegg Festival, the Helsinki Festival, the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, and the NTR ZaterdagMatinee, among others. It will receive its world premiere at the Edinburgh International Festival on August 28, followed by performances in Amsterdam, at Carnegie Hall, Cal Performances, the Barbican Centre, the Philharmonie de Paris, and with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
The concert also marks the 50th anniversary of “Music for 18 Musicians” and will include a hybrid presentation of “Clapping Music,” featuring Reich performing one part on film alongside percussionist Russell Hartenberger performing the other live. The filmed segment was conceived by filmmaker Atom Egoyan and recorded by Soundstreams in Los Angeles in 2023.
Performers include conductor Gary Kulesha, flutists Jeffrey Stonehouse and Stephen Tam, violinists Noa Sarid and Astrid Nakamura, violist Ronen Shifron, cellist Joanne Yesol Choi, pianists Gregory Oh, Stephanie Chua, Midori Koga, and Wesley Shen, sopranos Xin Wang and Lindsay McIntyre, mezzo soprano Andrea Ludwig, and percussionists Hartenberger, Bob Becker, Aiyun Huang, Ryan Scott, Michelle Colton, and Michael Murphy.
“Soundstreams has been privileged to have a long artistic and personal association with Steve, not only through frequent Toronto appearances when he was still traveling internationally, but through the legendary Toronto based percussionists and members of Nexus, Russell Hartenberger and Bob Becker, both of whom have a career long association with him as members of the Steve Reich Ensemble,” Lawrence Cherney, Artistic Director of Soundstreams said, per an official press release.
The concert is presented in collaboration with the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto.
