The Metropolitan Opera is set to revive Richard Eyre’s 2009 production of “Carmen.”
The AP News confirmed the news in an article in which “A person familiar with the Met’s planning, speaking on condition of anonymity because no announcement had been made, said the company intends in a future year to bring back Richard Eyre’s production. That staging premiered Dec. 31, 2009, and ran for 79 performances over six seasons through 2019.”
This would be the first time the Metropolitan returns to a retired production. Previously the Met had considered reviving the Franco Zeffirelli production of “Tosca” in 2009 after Luc Bondy’s production was booed on opening night and reviled by audiences and critics.
Carrie Cracknell’s current staging of “Carmen” has scored negative reviews and has only been shown a total of 30 times. Richard Eyre’s production has been performed by many great mezzos including Elīna Garanča, Anita Rachvelishvili, Clementine Margaine, and Kate Aldrich.
